Enroute from Punakaiki to Nelson we found the LONGEST SWING BRIDGE IN NEW ZEALAND. Couldn’t resist. It spans the Buller River and is the spot of another gold mining outpost. As an aside, we learned back at Ross that theres still an estimated $70 million dollars worth of gold in that vein. (Forgot to mention that in yesterday’s blog).
But back to the swing bridge. It’s 160 meters long. Yes, it swings, and yes, you can pass someone on the one-lane bridge!
The area is prone to floods, earthquakes, and rock slides. We were amazed to see the height of some of the recent floods.
